How do I calculate my horse's bodyweight?

It is incredibly important to gauge an accurate bodyweight of your horse before you worm. The most reliable measurement is calculated using a set of electronic weigh scales; however, these are not always available. Rather than guessing the bodyweight of your horse, there are other methods available, such as weigh tapes or the formula featured below, that will help you obtain a more accurate estimate of your horse’s bodyweight.

To gain an accurate estimate of your horse’s bodyweight, use the following formula
Adult horses:
[(girth in cm)2 x length]/ Y = Wt (kg)
where Y= 11900

Foal weight 0-60 days:
The measurement is of the foal’s girth (G), with a tape placed just behind the elbow and one inch (2.54 cm) behind the highest point of the withers. The measurement is taken when the foal has exhaled and is expressed in meters. The formula is:
Estimated weight (kg) = G³ x 90
(where G = heart girth measurement in meters.)
